Console Table
and Mirror

This table was designed as a response to my interest in creating furniture that synthesized civilization and nature. The side with the straight lines, 45 degree angles, compass curves and the cherry wood stripe represent civilization; the olive burl veneer and the side with irregular edges represent nature.

A further synthesis (God and man) is represented by the tapered legs which are formed by a circle (heaven) inscribed within a square (earth).

The mirror was to engage the individual to observe and reflect upon his or her relationship to nature and civilization. In the morning, most likely nature would have the upper hand.

At this time, I was obsessed with the idea that architectural styles reflected how different cultures regarded their relationship to nature. The more artificial the style, the greater the disconnect.
